Ghana’s Black Princesses suffer heavy Ecuador defeat in U20 World Cup opener

Ghana’s Black Princesses made a disappointing start to their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign after suffering a 3-0 defeat by Ecuador in their opening Group C match on Sunday.

An early goal from Rosa Flores and a second-half brace from Domenica Arboleda handed the South Americans a convincing victory and left Ghana facing an uphill task in their remaining group fixtures.

The Black Princesses showed moments of promise and came close to equalising in the first half, but Ecuador’s clinical finishing proved the difference in the contest.

Ghana must now regroup quickly ahead of their next match against Korea Republic.

Flores gives Ecuador flying start

Ecuador began the match strongly and took the lead after just four minutes.

Flores produced a spectacular long-range effort that sailed over Ghana goalkeeper Najat Salam to give the South American side an early advantage.

The Black Princesses attempted to respond and nearly found an immediate way back into the match when Agnes Yeboah struck the post.

However, Ghana were unable to capitalise on the opportunity.

Ecuador extend first-half advantage

The South Americans doubled their lead in the 17th minute through Arboleda.

Flores turned provider, delivering a well-weighted pass for her team-mate to finish and put Ecuador firmly in control.

Ghana continued to search for a response but struggled to break down an Ecuador side that remained dangerous throughout the contest.

Arboleda completes brace

The Black Princesses’ hopes of a comeback were effectively ended in the 70th minute when Arboleda scored her second goal of the match.

Her strike put the result beyond doubt as Ecuador completed an impressive opening victory.

Ghana were unable to find a response in the closing stages and were left to reflect on a difficult start to their World Cup campaign.

Tough challenge ahead for Ghana

The defeat leaves Ghana without a point after the opening round of Group C matches.

Ecuador sit top of the group after Korea Republic and France played out a 1-1 draw in the other fixture.

The Black Princesses still have two matches remaining, against Korea Republic and France, but will need a significant improvement in their next outing to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

For Ghana and African women’s football, the focus now turns to the crucial clash with Korea Republic, where the Black Princesses will be targeting a response and their first points of the tournament.
