John Obi Mikel: Xabi Alonso is a better manager than Mikel Arteta

Former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has sparked debate after declaring that he considers Xabi Alonso a better manager than Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Mikel, who remains closely connected to Chelsea, believes Alonso’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has brought a new identity and renewed optimism around the club.

Asked whether he considers Alonso a better manager than Arteta, Mikel gave a clear response.

“I think so,” the former Nigeria international said, as quoted by AFTV.

“We have a new manager, a new style of play. I like Xabi Alonso. I think we will see a new Chelsea, the way we want to play front-foot football, attacking football,” Mikel said.

The former midfielder believes Chelsea supporters are already beginning to see signs of progress under Alonso, particularly after the club’s performances in their opening matches.

“The way we’ve played the last two games, you can tell there’s something we’re cooking,” he added.

Mikel’s comments are likely to generate plenty of discussion given Alonso and Arteta’s respective reputations as two of the most highly regarded young managers in European football.

Arteta has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading coaches during his time at Arsenal, transforming the Gunners into regular title contenders and building a side known for its possession-based and aggressive style of play.
