Rodri set for Barcelona’s first La Liga start as Flick prepares Mestalla changes

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is expected to make several changes for Sunday’s La Liga meeting with Valencia at Mestalla, with one eye on the visit of Feyenoord in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League next Wednesday.

Rodri is widely expected to make his first start for Barcelona in La Liga since joining the club from Manchester City during the summer transfer window. His inclusion is regarded as almost certain, with the midfielder likely to operate alongside Pedri.

Fermin Lopez is also expected to return to the starting line-up, replacing Dani Olmo. The changes would form part of a wider reshuffle as Flick manages his squad ahead of Barcelona’s European campaign.

The main uncertainty concerns Lamine Yamal, who missed Saturday’s team training session after taking a knock. Flick will continue to assess the winger’s condition before making a final decision on whether he is fit to face Valencia.

Should Barcelona decide to rest him, Germany winger Karim Adeyemi is expected to take his place.

Raphinha’s involvement in the attack appears certain. He will officially wear the captain’s armband for the first time after the result of a vote was confirmed on Friday.

Anthony Gordon is also expected to start on the left wing after making a particularly strong beginning to the campaign. His form has strengthened his case for another appearance from the outset against Valencia.

Defensive changes expected

Flick is also considering adjustments in defence. Gerard Martin is expected to feature at left centre-back, while Eric Garcia could return to the starting line-up on the right.

However, Garcia will miss Barcelona’s opening UEFA Champions League match because of suspension. His expected appearance against Valencia would therefore provide an opportunity for him to play before being unavailable for the European fixture.

There could also be continuity in one position, with Xavi Espart potentially making his fourth consecutive start. Only goalkeeper Joan Garcia is expected to share that record.

Barcelona’s preparations for the match have therefore involved balancing two priorities: securing a positive result at Mestalla and ensuring the squad is ready for the meeting with Feyenoord four days later.

Rodri’s anticipated first La Liga start is the headline change, while the fitness of Lamine Yamal remains the decision that could have the greatest effect on the shape of the attack. Flick is expected to make his final choices after reviewing the winger’s condition and the wider needs of the team ahead of the club’s European return.
