UEFA sanction Fenerbahce and Olympique Lyonnais after fiery Europa tie

Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have been handed disciplinary sanctions by UEFA following the disorder and provocation during Fenerbahce’s second-leg match against Olympique Lyonnais.

The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body also imposed fines on both clubs after incidents during and after the Turkish side’s victory at Olympique Lyonnais, which secured Fenerbahce’s progress to the next round.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, one of the two Fenerbahce players will miss the beginning of the club’s return to the Champions League, a competition the Turkish team will re-enter after an 18-year absence. Fenerbahce are due to face Roma and Aston Villa.

Guendouzi received the heavier punishment. He was fined 50,000 euros and banned for a total of four matches in UEFA club competitions for which he would normally have been eligible.

The UEFA ruling said the former France international had been punished for insulting other people present at the match, provoking supporters and breaching the basic rules of conduct.

Two of Guendouzi’s four matches have been suspended for a probationary period of one year, beginning on the date of the decision. That means he will serve an immediate two-match ban, while the remaining two games will only be activated if he commits a further offence during the probation period.

The Fenerbahce player became involved in a confrontation with French supporters after the Turkish side won at Olympique Lyonnais to book its place in the next round.

Greenwood was fined 30,000 euros and given a one-match suspension, also suspended for a one-year probation period starting from the date of the decision.

Fenerbahce were fined on three separate counts. The club must pay 30,000 euros for the use of fireworks, 15,000 euros for crowd disorder and a further 50,000 euros for breaching the general and basic rules of conduct.

Olympique Lyonnais also punished

Fenerbahce were not the only club to face UEFA sanctions. Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was suspended for five matches after being found responsible for an assault.

The UEFA decision stated: “Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira is suspended for a total of five matches in UEFA club competitions for which he would normally be eligible to participate, for a serious assault. The suspension of two of these matches is subject to a probationary period of one year, beginning on the date of the decision.”

Ferreira, a member of Paulo Fonseca’s coaching staff, will therefore serve a three-match suspension immediately, with a further two matches suspended.

Olympique Lyonnais were also fined for several incidents. The French club must pay 48,000 euros for throwing objects, 5,500 euros for the use of fireworks and 5,000 euros for crowd disorder.

The club received its largest fine, 50,000 euros, for breaching the general and basic rules of conduct.

The sanctions relate to the atmosphere and incidents surrounding the second leg, in which Fenerbahce eliminated Olympique Lyonnais by winning away from home.
