Ghana winger Ernest Nuamah inspires Lyon to victory over AJ Auxerre with a goal and assist

Ghana international Ernest Nuamah scored and provided an assist on Friday as Olympique Lyon defeated AJ Auxerre 3-1 in the French Ligue 1.

The pacey attacker started the Week 3 fixture for his side and dazzle with his performance on the matchday, lasting 67 minutes before making way for Kail Boudache.

In the game played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, both teams had goals in the first half disallowed.

Lyon thought they had taken the lead in the 18th minute when Lois Openda finished a defence-splitting move with a low strike into the bottom corner.

However, a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside in the build-up.

Auxerre were also denied by VAR five minutes later after Cameron Archer found the net from inside the penalty area.

The visitors’ celebrations were cut short when the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

Lyon take control before Auxerre respond

Lyon eventually broke the deadlock in the 28th minute through Felix Bacher.

The defender rose highest inside the six-yard box to meet a corner and headed the ball into the right side of the net.

Nuamah then played a decisive role as Lyon doubled their advantage three minutes later.

The Ghana winger provided the assist for Zachary Athekame, who collected the pass before firing an unstoppable effort into the bottom-left corner.

Auxerre, however, remained in the contest and reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute.

Cameron Archer produced an impressive individual effort before finishing precisely into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-1 before the break.

Nuamah seals victory with superb strike

Nuamah ensured Lyon restored their two-goal advantage nine minutes into the second half.

The Black Stars winger capped an excellent individual run with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area, sending the ball into the bottom-right corner beyond Mamadou Diop.

It was the highlight of another impressive performance from the Ghanaian, who combined attacking creativity with a clinical finish to inspire Lyon to victory.

Nuamah’s goal and assist will also come as encouraging news for Ghana ahead of future international assignments, with the winger continuing to demonstrate his importance for both club and country.

Lyon’s victory strengthens their early-season momentum and takes the side to the summit of the Ligue 1 standings.
