Arsenal keep Ethan Nwaneri door open with January Dortmund recall clause

Arsenal have kept a route back to North London open for Ethan Nwaneri by inserting a January recall option into his loan agreement with Borussia Dortmund for the 2026-27 season.

The 19-year-old English-Nigerian has moved to the Bundesliga giants for the campaign after finding opportunities under Mikel Arteta increasingly limited at Arsenal. However, the structure of the deal suggests the Premier League champions have not closed the door on Nwaneri’s long-term future at the club.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Arsenal can recall Nwaneri in January if injuries create a shortage in Arteta’s squad or if the youngster’s performances in Germany convince the manager that he deserves another opportunity in the second half of the season.

The clause gives Arsenal flexibility while allowing Nwaneri to spend the opening months of the campaign gaining regular first-team experience in Germany.

Nwaneri follows English talent trail

Dortmund have developed a reputation for giving young players significant opportunities, and Nwaneri now joins a list of English talents who have used the German club as a platform.

Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham and Jamie Gittens all established themselves at Dortmund before securing high-profile moves elsewhere, and Nwaneri will hope to follow a similar path.

His departure comes after his rapid emergence at Arsenal initially appeared to put him on course for a prominent role in Arteta’s squad.

Nwaneri remains the youngest player to appear in Premier League history, having made his Arsenal debut against Brentford in 2022 at just 15 years and 181 days old.

Dortmund move offers fresh opportunity

The teenager’s immediate priority will be to rediscover his momentum by playing regularly for Dortmund.

Rather than spending another season largely competing for limited minutes in North London, the loan presents Nwaneri with an opportunity to develop in one of Europe’s most renowned environments for young players.

Arsenal, meanwhile, retain the ability to reassess the situation midway through the campaign. A strong first half of the season could put Nwaneri back into contention, particularly if injuries affect Arteta’s squad.

Nwaneri could make his Dortmund debut as early as tomorrow when they travel to face Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
