Sergio Ramos has backed Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi to become one of the leading centre-backs in world football, saying the teenager’s composure and maturity are “not normal” for someone of his age.

The former Real Madrid and Spain captain spoke enthusiastically about Cubarsi’s performances and the way he has handled the demands of playing at the highest level. Ramos highlighted the defender’s calmness under pressure, as well as the confidence he shows when making decisions during matches.

Cubarsi, who is 19, has impressed the experienced Spanish defender with the assurance he displays despite his relative lack of experience. Ramos believes that ability to remain composed is one of the young player’s most striking qualities.

“I was very impressed by Cubarsi. What surprises me most about him is the calmness he has. At that age, to play with such confidence and make decisions with such maturity is not normal,” Ramos said, in comments published by Tribuna.

Ramos was also asked whether Cubarsi’s career was following a path similar to his own. However, the former Spain captain avoided making a direct comparison between the two players and instead stressed that Cubarsi should be allowed to develop in his own way.

“I don’t want Cubarsi to be the new Sergio Ramos. I want him to be the best possible version of Pau Cubarsi. He has something special, and he still has huge room for improvement,” Ramos added.

The former Real Madrid defender’s comments reflect his confidence in the future available to Cubarsi, while also placing emphasis on the qualities the Barcelona player will need to maintain as his career progresses.

Ramos said continued hard work, humility and a determination to improve would be central to the defender’s long-term development.

“If he continues working, remains humble and does not lose his strong desire to improve, he has everything he needs to become one of the best centre-backs in the world,” he said.

Ramos also expressed the hope that Cubarsi would eventually be regarded among Spain’s finest defenders.

“I hope the day comes when we talk about the best defenders in Spain and Pau Cubarsi is there among them, among the very best,” Ramos concluded.

The praise from Ramos is notable because of his own standing as one of Spain’s most prominent defenders. Even so, rather than encouraging Cubarsi to follow in his footsteps, Ramos underlined the importance of the Barcelona player creating his own identity and continuing his personal development.
