Two years after his move to Spain, the French captain reflects on how Madrid has allowed him freedoms impossible in Paris.

Mbappé’s rise from Monaco prodigy to global icon brought unparalleled attention. He became a household name in France, endorsed by Nike, Dior and Hublot, and captained Les Bleus from 2023. Yet constant media focus and security needs in Paris left him yearning for balance.

“Fame… Let’s just say I was prepared quite early on to experience ‘normal’ fame, because my entourage knew that I was likely to become a very good football player. But today, I’m beyond super famous, my fame is extraordinary. And that’s something you’re never prepared for. You just have to accept it and adapt,” Mbappe told Le Parisien.

In Madrid, he can drive, dine out and move more freely. “I can go out, sometimes without security… I can live, more so than in France!” he said. “In Paris, that wasn’t possible.” For Mbappe, that peace of mind is a luxury no contract could match.
