Luke Le Roux: South Africa midfielder leaves Portsmouth after one-year stay

South Africa midfielder Luke Le Roux is now without a club after completing his departure from Portsmouth, bringing his spell with the Championship side to an end.

The 26-year-old central midfielder left Portsmouth on 3 September 2026, following a year with the club. Le Roux joined the south-coast side from Swedish club Varnamo on 25 July 2025 and made one appearance in the 2026-27 EFL Cup before his exit.

Le Roux did not feature for Portsmouth in the Championship this season. His final appearance came in the EFL Cup, where he started and played 67% of the match. He did not score or provide an assist during that appearance.

The midfielder began his senior career in South Africa with Ikapa Sporting before moving to SuperSport United in July 2016. He then spent time on loan at Stellenbosch FC, returning to SuperSport United in January 2018 before making a move to Sweden in February 2020.

Le Roux joined Varbergs BoIS from SuperSport United and remained in Sweden for several seasons. He moved to FC Volendam in the Netherlands in August 2023, before returning to Sweden with Varnamo the following year.

His move to Portsmouth marked a return to English football, although his time at the club ended after one season. Le Roux has also been listed as a central midfielder throughout his recent career and is right-footed.

The Stellenbosch-born player stands 1.84m tall and has a current market value of €800,000. His highest recorded market value has been €1m.
