Jamie Carragher: Arsenal desperately need a ‘gamechanger’ like Vinicius Junior

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal are desperately missing a genuine “gamechanger” in attack, insisting only a handful of world-class players could improve Mikel Arteta’s already formidable squad.

The former Liverpool defender says Arsenal’s failure to land a player of the calibre of Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior or Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez could prove significant as they attempt to retain the Premier League title.

The Gunners strengthened across several areas during the summer, bringing in Bruno Guimarães, Piero Hincapié, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier as part of their efforts to build a squad capable of defending their crown.

However, their attacking options have come under scrutiny following the departures of Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal had been linked with Vinicius and Alvarez during the transfer window, but neither deal materialised, leaving Arteta without the marquee attacking addition many supporters had hoped for.

‘They needed someone to be a gamechanger’

Carragher believes Arsenal already possess enough quality in most areas of the pitch and argues that their biggest need was a player capable of producing decisive moments at the highest level.

“They have got really good strikers. I like Kai Havertz and I think Mikel Arteta likes him, as well.

“(Viktor Gyokeres) has been what most people felt he would be when he came — not quite elite but he can still score goals in certain games.”

Gyokeres has made only one appearance so far this campaign and is yet to score, adding to concerns over Arsenal’s attacking output.

Carragher says the club’s pursuit of Vinicius and Alvarez demonstrated the level of player they believed could take the team to another level.

“They needed someone to be a gamechanger. They tried to get Vinicius Junior, they tried to get Alvarez – that’s the calibre of players.

“It’s very hard to improve Arsenal now because they are such a good team, such a strong squad. So you’re talking about a world class player as the only one that can improve them.”

Attack could decide Arsenal’s title hopes

Arsenal’s defensive unit remains one of the strongest in the Premier League, with Arteta having built a side that is difficult to break down.

The concern, however, is whether their attack can consistently deliver when matches are decided by fine margins.

The departures of Martinelli, Trossard and Jesus have reduced Arteta’s attacking depth, while the early struggles of Gyokeres have intensified questions over where the goals will come from.

For Carragher, Arsenal’s challenge is not a lack of quality but the absence of a truly elite attacker capable of changing games on his own.

With the margins at the top of the Premier League increasingly narrow, that missing spark could ultimately determine whether Arsenal finally go all the way or fall short once again.
