Rulani Mokwena: My approach at Pyramids differs from my predecessor Jurčić

Pyramids FC head coach Rulani Mokwena says his management style is different from that of predecessor Krunoslav Jurčić, but insists both coaches share the same objective of helping the Egyptian champions win matches.

The South African coach explained that while his methods differ in personality and approach, he believes giving players the tools to solve problems on the pitch is central to his philosophy.

“My management style at Pyramids differs from Jurčić’s,” Mokwena said. “Every coach has his own way of motivating players.”

The 38-year-old took charge of Pyramids after Jurčić’s successful spell, inheriting a squad expected to compete for domestic honours and challenge in continental competitions.

Mokwena stressed that differences in coaching style should not be mistaken for a change in ambition.

“Our personalities and beliefs are different, but the goal is the same, which is to give the players everything they need to win,” he said.

Focus on solving problems

Known for his tactical emphasis, Mokwena said his work extends beyond match preparation, with players encouraged to think independently during demanding fixtures.

“Technically, I motivate the players to solve problems, especially in big and difficult matches,” he explained.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach added that success is driven by more than tactical instruction, pointing to a combination of psychological, emotional and practical motivations within a squad.

“Psychologically, there are internal and external incentives from the coach, the fans, the financial aspect and the desire to achieve glory,” he said.

Pyramids will now turn their attention to continental duties as they prepare to face Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in the CAF Champions League qualifying round.

Mokwena has built a reputation as one of Africa’s leading young coaches after his success in South Africa, and his arrival at Pyramids has been viewed as the start of a new chapter for the Cairo-based club as it seeks to build on recent achievements under Jurčić.
