Rulani Mokwena hails Egyptian rivals as Pyramids shift focus to Gor Mahia

Pyramids FC head coach Rulani Mokwena has paid tribute to Egyptian football giants Zamalek and Al Ahly, describing both clubs as pillars of the country’s football history despite the challenges facing one of their fiercest rivals.

The South African coach praised Zamalek’s enduring stature after watching the Cairo club extensively in the CAF Champions League, insisting that their rich tradition remains intact even during a period of transition.

“I’ve seen Zamalek play a lot in the CAF Champions League,” Mokwena said. “I know they’ve lost many players and changed their coach, but Zamalek will always be Zamalek.”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach acknowledged the White Knights’ recent upheaval but argued that the club’s importance to Egyptian football extends beyond results on the pitch.

“Zamalek is a historic and very important club for the Egyptian people,” he said. “They contribute to the development of football despite the difficulties they face.”

Mokwena also expressed confidence that the club can overcome its current struggles.

“I respect Zamalek a lot, and I believe there is a path to success and a way to solve their problems,” he added.

The Pyramids boss was equally complimentary about reigning Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, highlighting the quality within the club’s squad and its global reputation.

“Al Ahly has many great players, and when anyone thinks about Egyptian football, they think about Al Ahly,” he said.

His comments underline the respect shared among Egypt’s leading clubs, with Pyramids having emerged as one of the country’s strongest teams in recent seasons alongside the traditional Cairo rivals.

Pyramids will now turn their attention to continental duties as they prepare to face Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in the CAF Champions League qualifying round, with Mokwena aiming to guide his side a step closer to the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition.
