Relebohile Mofokeng scores on first Royale Union Saint-Gilloise league start

Relebohile Mofokeng marked his first league start for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise with a goal as his side beat Sint-Truidense VV 3-0 on Wednesday.

The former Orlando Pirates forward completed the scoring after 63 minutes, taking his tally to two goals in four Jupiler Pro League appearances since joining the Belgian club. It was his first goal as a starter in the competition and capped a strong performance from the South Africa international.

Head coach David Hubert rewarded Mofokeng with his first league start and the Bafana Bafana attacker responded by making a decisive contribution in an important victory. Royale Union Saint-Gilloise controlled the match after taking the lead and ultimately secured their third win in four games.

Louis Patris opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, giving the hosts an advantage that they maintained until half-time. Captain Kevin Mac Allister then doubled the lead 10 minutes after the restart, putting Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in a commanding position.

Mofokeng added the third eight minutes later. His goal came in the 63rd minute, although he was substituted shortly afterwards as Hubert made changes with the result effectively secured.

The victory lifted Royale Union Saint-Gilloise into second place in the Jupiler Pro League standings on 10 points. They are two points behind leaders Charleroi, who have won all of their matches so far.

Mofokeng and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise will now face Charleroi on Saturday in a meeting between the top two teams. The result will give the club an opportunity to close the gap on the leaders and extend their own strong start to the campaign.

For Mofokeng, the goal continues a productive beginning to his time in Belgium. After featuring in four league matches, he now has two goals, with his latest coming when he was entrusted with a starting role for the first time in the competition.

The 3-0 result also maintained Royale Union Saint-Gilloise’s momentum, with the club collecting three victories in their opening four games. Their next fixture against unbeaten Charleroi will provide a direct test of their position near the top of the table.
