Chelsea target Georginio Wijnaldum after Lamine Camara deal collapses

Chelsea are exploring a move for free agent Georginio Wijnaldum after their late attempt to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara fell through, according to Foot Mercato.

The London club are looking for a replacement in midfield following Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City. The transfer was completed for £125m, making it the joint most expensive deal in Premier League history, alongside Liverpool forward Alexander Isak’s move from Newcastle last season.

Foot Mercato reports that Chelsea have made contact with Wijnaldum, who is currently without a club after leaving Al-Ettifaq at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The 35-year-old is free to sign for any club without a transfer fee. Chelsea are understood to be prepared to offer him a short-term contract, provided personal terms can be agreed.

Chelsea manager Alonso considers Wijnaldum an attractive option because of his experience in the Premier League. The Netherlands international played 217 league matches during spells with Newcastle United and Liverpool between 2015 and 2021.

Wijnaldum was a key part of the Liverpool side that won the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. He left Liverpool when his contract expired and joined Paris Saint-Germain, before subsequently moving to Roma on loan.

The midfielder joined Al-Ettifaq three years ago and departed at the end of the most recent Saudi Pro League season. He scored 17 goals in 34 appearances for the club last season.

Chelsea’s interest emerged after their proposed agreement for Camara failed in the final moments. The breakdown has prompted the club to consider an experienced alternative, with Wijnaldum now available on a free transfer.

His previous Premier League record, combined with his availability and willingness to consider a short-term deal, has made him a potential option for Alonso as Chelsea assess their midfield following Fernandez’s departure. However, the move remains dependent on agreement over the player’s personal conditions.
