Omar Fayed scores on debut but Frosinone suffer Coppa Italia exit

Frosinone were eliminated from the Coppa Italia after losing to Sassuolo on penalties, despite Omar Fayed making his first appearance for the club and successfully converting his spot-kick in the shootout.

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Sassuolo taking the tie to penalties. The shootout was recorded as ending 4-3, although the match account also states that Frosinone won the penalty contest by that score. The subsequent details confirm that Frosinone’s missed penalties sent them out of the competition.

Frosinone fell behind in the 36th minute when Benja Dominguez put Sassuolo ahead. The home side responded before half-time, with Aleksa Terzic equalising in the final minute of the first half.

Fayed began the match on the bench and was introduced in the 62nd minute, replacing Kevin Akpoguma. The appearance was the defender’s first for Frosinone since joining the Italian club during the summer transfer window from Turkish side Fenerbahce.

The Egypt international then became involved in a key moment 13 minutes after coming on. Matteo Cichella appeared to have put Frosinone in front in the 75th minute, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review. The decision was made because of a foul committed by Fayed in the middle of the pitch during the build-up.

Neither side could find a winning goal before the end of normal time, leaving the outcome to be decided from 12 yards. Fayed took Frosinone’s second penalty and converted successfully, offering his side an early boost in the shootout.

That advantage was not enough, however. Frosinone teammates Louis Hasa and Wisdom Amey both missed their attempts, allowing Sassuolo to progress to the next round of the Coppa Italia and ending Frosinone’s campaign in the last-32 stage.

Fayed joined Frosinone from Fenerbahce in the most recent summer transfer window. His debut provided a positive personal moment as he played in the second half and scored from the spot, but the result overshadowed his contribution as his new club were knocked out of the cup.

Frosinone will now turn their attention back to league football. Their next fixture is against Venezia on Sunday, 6 September, in the third round of Serie A.
