Kaizer Chiefs eye top-two gap as Kwinika backs ‘good start’

Kaizer Chiefs will look to strengthen their position near the top of the Betway Premiership when they face winless Siwelele FC at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday.

Chiefs have taken eight points from their opening four matches, winning two and drawing two, and sit third in the table. They are two points behind early leaders Orlando Pirates and level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one match fewer.

The unbeaten record has come during Fernando Da Cruz’s first campaign as Kaizer Chiefs head coach. Defender Zitha Kwinika believes the team has made encouraging progress, although he accepts there are still aspects of their game that need attention.

Speaking to the media at Naturena on Wednesday morning, Kwinika said Chiefs could have made better use of the points available to them but remained confident about the direction of the team.

“I think for me it’s a good start. To be honest, we started well. It’s just football things that need to be fixed. And then we continue. Yes, it’s not maybe the most required result because of points we lost or how we lost the points,” Kwinika said.

He added that the squad remained convinced it was moving along the right path.

“But for me, we are in the right track and heading in the right direction.”

Sunday’s opponents are at the opposite end of the Betway Premiership table. Bloemfontein-based Siwelele FC are 14th after collecting only two points from four matches.

They have yet to win in the 2026/27 campaign, recording two draws and two defeats. Siwelele FC have scored three goals and conceded six.

Their season began with a 2-2 draw against TS Galaxy before they suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Milford FC. A 2-0 loss at AmaZulu followed, while they drew 1-1 with Chippa United in their most recent fixture.

The match offers Kaizer Chiefs an opportunity to put pressure on the teams above them. A victory would take them to 11 points from a possible 15 and could reduce the gap to the leading sides.

Chiefs have positive memories of their most recent visit to Dobsonville Stadium. In October 2025, they used the venue for their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round match against AS Simba of the DRC, winning 3-0.

The club will hope for another strong performance in Soweto, as well as a similarly festive atmosphere, when they return to the stadium on Sunday.
