Manchester City lead record Premier League spending as Chelsea top player-sale profits

The summer transfer window in England has closed with Premier League clubs setting a new spending record after investing £3.46bn in signings, while Manchester City emerged as the biggest spenders and Chelsea generated the highest income from player sales.

The total spent by Premier League clubs during the summer is the largest ever recorded for a single transfer window. The figure underlines the scale of investment made by England’s leading clubs as they strengthened their squads.

Manchester City accounted for the biggest individual club outlay, spending £458m. That is the highest amount ever spent by a club in one transfer window.

The club’s incoming players included Enzo Fernandez, Ayoub Bouaddi, Elliot Anderson, Iliman Ndiaye and Geronimo Rulli.

Chelsea were the second-highest spenders among English clubs, committing £349m to their summer recruitment. Tottenham Hotspur ranked third after spending £302m.

Liverpool were fourth in the spending table, with their summer signings costing £198m, while Arsenal completed the top five after investing £194m.

The figures place Manchester City well clear of the other leading spenders, with their total more than £100m higher than Chelsea’s and more than double Liverpool’s outlay.

Chelsea’s activity was also notable on the sales side. They made £382m from player departures, the highest total recorded by any club in England during the window.

That means Chelsea finished the summer as the leading club for income from player sales, despite ranking second behind Manchester City for total spending on new arrivals.

The overall Premier League spending figure of £3.46bn represents a historic high for a single summer transfer period. It follows a window in which the leading English clubs committed substantial sums to recruitment while Chelsea also recorded the largest profit from outgoing transfers.

Manchester City’s £458m investment remains the standout figure among individual clubs. Their spending included the arrivals of Fernandez, Bouaddi, Anderson, Ndiaye and Rulli, as they assembled the most expensive squad-building operation of the window.

Chelsea’s £349m placed them next, followed by Tottenham Hotspur on £302m. Liverpool and Arsenal were separated by only £4m, with Liverpool spending £198m and Arsenal £194m.
