Rennes call on Boulaye Dia’s experience to strengthen Europa League ambitions

Stade Rennais have completed the late addition of Boulaye Dia to their attack, signing the Senegal international from Lazio as they prepare for a season featuring UEFA Europa League football and high expectations in Ligue 1.

The 29-year-old striker arrives on loan with an option for Stade Rennais to make the transfer permanent. Having already played in both Spain and Italy, Dia will now take on a new challenge in France as Rennes look to improve their attacking options and compete near the top end of the league.

The agreement, reported by L’Equipe, includes a €2m loan fee and an €8m purchase option. The structure allows Stade Rennais to benefit immediately from Dia’s experience while retaining the opportunity to secure his services on a permanent basis at the end of the loan.

Dia is regarded as the final signing of Rennes’ transfer window. His market value is estimated at €5m by Transfermarkt, although the potential permanent transfer fee in the agreement is higher than that valuation.

The Senegalese forward will be expected to settle quickly and provide experience to a squad with ambitions of challenging for a place among the leading sides in Ligue 1. His arrival gives Rennes another established attacking option as they balance domestic competition with their European campaign.

Dia’s move to Brittany follows spells in Spain and Italy, where he developed his reputation before joining Lazio. He now returns to France for a fresh stage in his career, with Stade Rennais seeking an immediate contribution from a player familiar with the demands of international football.

Before his departure from Lazio, Dia was reported to have earned an annual salary of €2.56m in Italy, equivalent to 1.664bn CFA francs.

Lazio are due to play Udinese in the third round of the Italian championship very soon. Betting company 1xBet listed odds of 2.55 for a Lazio win, 3.00 for a draw and 2.88 for an Udinese victory.

Dia’s move completes Rennes’ recruitment in attack during this transfer window. The club’s qualification for the UEFA Europa League, combined with its ambitions in Ligue 1, means the Senegal international will be asked to make an impact across several competitions.

For Stade Rennais, the deal represents a late opportunity to add a player with experience of top-level football in more than one country. For Dia, it offers the chance to relaunch his career in France and establish himself quickly within a Rennes side aiming high this season.
