Khoza warns Sundowns not to underestimate high-energy Milford

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Malibongwe Khoza says his side must be prepared for an energetic and counter-attacking Milford FC when the two teams meet in the Betway Premiership at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00, with league leaders Sundowns facing newcomers who have made an encouraging start to their first campaign in South Africa’s top flight.

“So, I think we are very ready for them and we are going to give our all for our supporters.

“I wouldn’t say I am surprised because they have a lot of experienced players. They have been playing, they have been in the league, so I think that really helps them to keep the momentum going and keeping the team stable.”

The 22-year-old defender’s comments underline the respect Sundowns have for Milford, whose squad includes players with previous experience of top-flight football.

For Sundowns, the match comes during a positive spell in domestic competition. The club have reached the MTN8 final, where they will play Orlando Pirates, and Khoza says the achievement is significant after criticism that the team had not placed enough emphasis on local cup competitions.

“I mean, it feels amazing because it’s been something that we always wanted to do, because a lot of people are complaining that we are not putting more focus on local competitions,” he added.

“So, we made sure that we reached the final and we will try to win.”

Sundowns will now aim to maintain their unbeaten league record against a Milford side hoping to build on its promising beginning. The visitors’ ability to counter-attack, combined with the experience in their squad, will provide a test of the champions’ defensive organisation.
