Adama Boiro joins West Ham as Athletic Club defender switches to Championship

Spanish-Senegalese left-back Adama Boiro has joined West Ham from Athletic Club on loan, bringing the 24-year-old defender to the Championship until 30 June 2027.

Boiro completes the move on 1 September 2026 after beginning the season with Athletic Club in LaLiga. He had made one league appearance for the Basque side before changing divisions and moving to England.

The Dakar-born defender is a natural left-back and favours his left foot. Standing 1.83m tall, Boiro adds a specialist option on the left side of West Ham’s defence as the club prepares for its Championship campaign.

His move to West Ham comes after two seasons with Athletic Club. Boiro joined the senior side from Bilbao Athletic on 1 July 2024, having previously moved to the club’s reserve team from Osasuna B in January of that year.

That earlier transfer from Osasuna B to Bilbao Athletic was completed for €2m. Boiro had progressed through Osasuna’s system, moving from the club’s youth team to Osasuna B in 2021 before making the switch to Bilbao Athletic.

Boiro’s professional career has so far included senior football in both LaLiga and the Championship. His arrival at West Ham gives him a new domestic setting in England and marks his first recorded move outside Spain.

The loan agreement runs through the 2026-27 season, with Boiro scheduled to return to Athletic Club on 30 June 2027. His recorded market value is €2.5m, while his highest listed valuation has been €3m.

At Athletic Club, Boiro was part of a squad competing in Spain’s top flight. At West Ham, he will continue his career in England’s second tier, where the club’s current league campaign is under way.

Boiro began his development with CA Osasuna’s youth structure before stepping into reserve-team football. His progression through Osasuna B, Bilbao Athletic and Athletic Club has now been followed by a temporary move to West Ham.

The transfer also represents a return to regular competitive focus for a player whose involvement at Athletic Club had been limited at the start of the season. He joins West Ham with a contract arrangement in place until the end of June 2027, when the loan expires.

Adama Boiro is now a West Ham player on loan from Athletic Club for the 2026-27 season.
