Azzedine Ounahi returns to Panathinaikos with 25m euro obligation

Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi is set to return to Panathinaikos Athens on a season-long loan from Girona FC, with an obligation to buy fixed at 25 million euros.

The 26-year-old, who impressed during his 2024-2025 loan spell in Greece, will head back to the Greek capital as he continues his career revival.

Ounahi remains under contract with Girona until June 2030, but this move marks another chapter in his journey after leaving Olympique de Marseille in August 2025 for 6 million euros. The deal included a clause granting Marseille 30 percent of any future profit on his resale, a smart piece of business now paying off.

With Panathinaikos poised to trigger the 25 million euro purchase, Marseille stands to earn nearly 6 million euros from the transaction. The Phocaean club will collect approximately 5.7 million euros from the 19 million euro potential profit, rewarding their earlier negotiation foresight.

The international midfielder, boasting 55 caps and 11 goals for Morocco, brings valuable experience to Panathinaikos as they compete domestically and in Europe. For Marseille, the incoming funds offer financial relief and proof that strategic clauses can yield long-term benefits even after a player departs.
