Hossam Hassan extends Egypt contract through 2030 World Cup

Hossam Hassan will remain in charge of Egypt until the 2030 World Cup after the Egyptian Football Association confirmed an extension to his contract.

The decision means Hassan will continue leading the Pharaohs after a period in which he guided Egypt to a historic World Cup qualification campaign and a notable run at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hassan has been appointed as Egypt’s head coach, with his brother Ibrahim Hassan continuing as national team director. The coaching staff also includes Tarek Soliman as assistant coach, Mohamed Abdel Wahed as coach and Saffan El-Saghir as goalkeeping coach.

Hassan’s achievements with Egypt

Under Hassan, Egypt qualified for the World Cup for the fourth time in the country’s history.

At the 2026 World Cup, Hassan led the Pharaohs to their first victory in the competition’s history. That result came against New Zealand and represented a landmark moment for Egyptian football.

Egypt also progressed beyond the group stage under Hassan before advancing through the round of 32 to reach the last 16.

The national team also reached the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, eventually finishing fourth in the tournament.

Those results have formed the basis for the Egyptian Football Association’s decision to retain Hassan through the 2030 World Cup, keeping the same coaching structure in place as the team prepares for its next competitive campaign.

Hassan’s record

Hassan has taken charge of Egypt in 35 matches.

During that run, the Pharaohs have recorded 19 victories, suffered five defeats and drawn 11 times.

Egypt have scored 51 goals with Hassan in charge and conceded 25. The team have also kept 17 clean sheets during his tenure.

The figures form part of a period in which Egypt have combined improved results with progress in major international competitions, including their qualification for the 2026 World Cup and their run to the last four of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Africa Cup of Nations qualifying

Egypt will begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with matches against Angola and South Sudan next September.

The Pharaohs are due to face Angola at 22:00 local time on 25 September at Cairo International Stadium in their opening qualifying fixture.

Four days later, on 29 September, Egypt will play South Sudan in Juba. That match is scheduled to begin at 15:00 Cairo time.

Egypt are in Group B alongside Angola, South Sudan and Malawi.

The Egyptian Football Association is also seeking to arrange a friendly match in September against one of Tanzania, Ghana or Rwanda.

Hassan’s new contract ensures he will oversee the national team during the forthcoming qualification schedule and remain responsible for Egypt’s preparations through the 2030 World Cup.
