Moussa Diaby joins Bayer Leverkusen from Al Ittihad until 2031

Former Aston Villa and France winger Moussa Diaby has completed a sensational return to Bayer Leverkusen, signing a contract that will keep him at the Bundesliga club until 2031.

Leverkusen announced the 27-year-old’s return on Tuesday after reaching an agreement with Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad.

German tabloid Bild reports that Leverkusen paid €27 million to bring Diaby back to the BayArena, three years after he left the club for Aston Villa in a €55 million transfer.

Diaby made no secret of his desire to return to the club where he established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most dangerous attacking players.

“When the request came, and the move was possible, I didn’t doubt it for a second,” Diaby said in a statement.

“The club has gotten bigger in the meantime – aiming for titles with Leverkusen is a very big goal of mine.”

Bundesliga return for French star

Diaby spent four seasons with Leverkusen after joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, developing into a key figure in the club’s attack.

His pace, direct running and ability to create chances made him a standout performer, with the winger registering 31 goals and 37 assists in 125 Bundesliga appearances.

His performances in Germany also earned him international recognition. Diaby made his France debut during his time at Leverkusen and went on to win 11 caps for the two-time world champions.

He has not featured for France since before Euro 2024, but his return to the Bundesliga gives him an opportunity to rebuild his form at a club where he previously enjoyed the best period of his career.

Villa spell ends in Saudi Arabia

Aston Villa made Diaby one of their major attacking signings in 2023, paying €55 million to secure his services from Leverkusen.

However, his stay in Birmingham lasted just one season before he moved to Saudi Arabia, joining Al Ittihad.

Now, just two years after leaving Germany, Diaby is back at the BayArena and has committed his long-term future to Leverkusen.

Leverkusen strengthen attack

The move comes as Leverkusen seek to improve their attacking options following a disappointing campaign in which they missed out on Champions League qualification.

Leverkusen enjoyed a historic 2023-24 season, winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double, and Diaby’s return represents a major statement of intent as the club looks to challenge for silverware again.

His familiarity with the club and Bundesliga could also allow him to settle quickly as Leverkusen attempt to restore themselves among Germany’s leading sides.
