Pitso Mosimane refuses to hit back at Hugo Broos, praises his Bafana Bafana legacy

South Africa new coach Pitso Mosimane has refused to engage in a war of words with his predecessor Hugo Broos, despite criticism from the Belgian over his return.

Broos, who previously led Bafana Bafana, questioned Mosimane’s appointment and suggested that bringing the 62-year-old coach back could take South Africa’s national team backwards.

The Belgian also raised concerns over Mosimane’s squad selection, claiming that the coach could be influenced by club bosses and agents when deciding which players to select for the national team.

Mosimane, however, has chosen not to respond in kind. Instead of addressing Broos’ criticism directly, the experienced coach used the opportunity to acknowledge the work done by his predecessor and those who managed Bafana Bafana before his return.

“I will answer the questions related to my job, which is coaching,” Mosimane said.

“I think way before I have recognised and praised Hugo Broos for what he’s done. I appreciate the work Broos has done and everyone else has done before my return to Bafana Bafana coach.

“He has laid very good foundations for us. He has done exceptionally well. I’m not saying it today only, I’ve said it before. He has put a good foundation for me.”

Mosimane reiterated his appreciation for Broos’ contribution, making it clear that his focus is on moving forward rather than becoming involved in a public dispute with the former Bafana coach.

“I appreciate the work Broos has done and everyone else has done before my return to Bafana Bafana coach,” he added.

Broos enjoyed a successful spell in charge of South Africa, guiding the national team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal and helping Bafana secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mosimane now inherits a team that has made significant progress under previous leadership and will be expected to build on those foundations.

His immediate challenge will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with South Africa set to face Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea in their qualifying group.

Rather than responding to Broos’ criticism, Mosimane has chosen to acknowledge the work left behind for him, insisting that his attention remains firmly on the task of coaching Bafana Bafana.
