Arsenal have confirmed the permanent transfer of Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira to Hamburger SV for a reported £7.7m, bringing an end to his time at the Premier League club after they accepted a substantial loss on the £34m they paid Porto for him in June 2022.
The 26-year-old has returned to Hamburg following an impressive loan spell with HSV last season. He scored seven goals and supplied six assists in 31 competitive appearances, finishing as the club’s leading scorer and joint-top provider of assists.
Hamburger SV, newly promoted to the Bundesliga at the time, secured a comfortable 13th-place finish. Vieira’s performances played a significant role in their campaign and convinced the German club to make his move permanent.
“I’m very happy to be back,” Vieira said. “I already know the club, the fans, and many of my teammates. It feels great to be a part of it again. I knew from the beginning that there was a possibility for me to come back here. I felt that HSV had made a real effort to bring me back. Now I’m back and can’t wait to get started again.”
Vieira joined Arsenal from Porto with high expectations but was unable to establish himself as a regular starter in the Premier League. He made 49 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League champions, although only five of those came as league starts.
The midfielder spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Porto before moving to Germany, where he rediscovered his form and helped HSV consolidate their position in the Bundesliga.
Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa praised Vieira’s influence during his loan spell and said the club were pleased to have secured his long-term future.
“We all know what we have in Fabio,” Costa said. “He was an absolute game-changer for us last season and possesses qualities that add a special dimension to our play.”
Vieira’s permanent departure brings to a close a spell in north London that failed to deliver the level of regular first-team football anticipated when he arrived from Porto.
Arsenal confirmed the transfer in a post on their official X account and offered the midfielder their best wishes for the next stage of his career.
“Fabio Vieira has joined Hamburger SV on a permanent deal,” read a statement from Arsenal’s X account.
“We wish you all the best, Fabio!”
