Chelsea agree deal to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Atalanta teenager Honest Ahanor, with the 18-year-old defender set to move to Stamford Bridge in the next off-season.

Ahanor, who is primarily a left-back, has established himself as a regular starter for Atalanta since joining the club from Genoa last off-season. The initial transfer fee was reportedly 16m euros, with a further 4m euros potentially payable in add-ons.

The teenager made 28 Serie A appearances last season and also featured in the Champions League. He made his competition debut in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Club Brugge last September.

His performances also led to a first senior Italy call-up in May, when he was included in the squad for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece.

Chelsea’s interest in Ahanor developed around the same period that they signed Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra in July. The agreement for Ahanor now gives the Blues a long-term commitment from another promising defender.

The deal is the latest part of Chelsea’s ongoing squad-building project under manager Xabi Alonso, who took charge at Stamford Bridge in July.

Alonso has already overseen a number of significant additions to the squad. Morgan Rogers joined from Aston Villa for a club-record fee of £117m, while experienced Premier League players Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have also arrived.

Chelsea have also allowed several players to leave, including striker Marc Guiu, who has joined RB Leipzig in a deal worth £14.6m including add-ons.

Guiu moved to Chelsea from his boyhood club Barcelona in July 2024. During his time with the Blues, the 20-year-old made 29 first-team appearances and scored eight goals.

Ahanor’s move will give Chelsea another young defensive option as they continue to reshape their squad under Alonso. The Italian defender’s ability to operate at left-back has made him a regular at club level, while his experience in Serie A and the Champions League has accelerated his development.

He joined Genoa before moving to Atalanta last off-season and quickly became an important member of their first-team group. His performances during the campaign helped secure his place in the senior Italy set-up, despite his age.

The transfer agreement will not take effect immediately, with Ahanor scheduled to officially join Chelsea in the next off-season. Until then, he remains an Atalanta player.

Chelsea’s recruitment activity has included a mixture of emerging talent and established Premier League experience. The agreement for Ahanor follows their earlier deal for Palestra and adds further depth to their defensive plans, while the arrivals of Rogers, Welbeck and Henderson have strengthened other areas of the team.

Meanwhile, Guiu’s move to RB Leipzig marks one of the departures from the squad after his single season with Chelsea. His transfer includes add-ons, taking the potential value of the deal to £14.6m.
