Pitso Mosimane set to be unveiled as South Africa head coach

Pitso Mosimane is set to be appointed as the new head coach of the South African national team, replacing Belgian coach Hugo Broos.

Mosimane, one of Africa’s most decorated and experienced coaches, is expected to take charge of Bafana Bafana after a highly successful managerial career at both domestic and continental level.

The 62-year-old previously coached South Africa between 2010 and 2012, making his expected return to the national team a significant development for the country’s football.

Mosimane built his reputation during his long spell with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he established himself as one of the leading coaches on the continent.

His greatest success at club level came with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, whom he guided to back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2020 and 2021.

He also led Al Ahly to the CAF Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup bronze medal during his time in Cairo.

His achievements with Sundowns included winning the CAF Champions League in 2016, making him one of the few coaches to have lifted African club football’s biggest prize with two different teams.

Mosimane’s appointment would therefore bring considerable experience to a South African side preparing for an important period on the international stage.

Broos, who guided Bafana Bafana to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals in 2023 and helped restore the team to prominence, would make way for a coach who already has extensive knowledge of South African football.

Mosimane’s return would also be welcomed by supporters who remember his successful first spell with the national team and his subsequent achievements with Sundowns and Al Ahly.

The experienced coach now faces the task of building on South Africa’s recent progress and competing for major international honours.
