Bukayo Saka gives Arsenal hard-fought win at Aston Villa

Arsenal moved to the top end of the Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 victory away from home against Aston Villa, securing their second win of the season.

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match in the 60th minute, finishing after Ricardo Calafiori delivered a low cross into the area. The result gives Arsenal six points from their opening two matches and keeps them level with Manchester City, Chelsea and Hull City, who lead the early Premier League standings.

The victory was achieved without Arsenal finding a wide margin of success, but Mikel Arteta’s side did enough to leave Villa Park with all three points. Saka’s goal proved decisive in a game in which the visitors were unable to add to their advantage after taking the lead.

For Aston Villa, the defeat means they remain without a point after two matches. They began their campaign with a loss against Brighton and have now suffered a second successive defeat.

The game also featured several notable player appearances involving both clubs. Ezri Konsa, Arsenal’s new defender who joined the Premier League champions from Aston Villa, took part against his former side.

Bruno Guimaraes was also involved after missing Arsenal’s opening match because of injury. His return provided another significant moment for the visitors as they continued their strong start to the campaign.

Aston Villa included Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who joined the club only a few days earlier. He was brought in to replace Emiliano Martinez following the Argentine goalkeeper’s departure.

Nicolas Jackson also made an appearance for Aston Villa after moving to the club from Chelsea. His involvement added another new option to the Villa squad as they looked to respond to their opening-day defeat.

Arsenal’s second victory leaves them among the early front-runners after two rounds of the competition. Their next test will come against Chelsea in the third round, when they will face one of the other teams currently on six points.

Aston Villa will attempt to record their first win of the season when they play Hull City next. The two fixtures will provide an immediate opportunity for both clubs to change the direction of their respective starts: Arsenal will look to maintain their place at the top of the table, while Villa will be seeking to end a run of two consecutive defeats.
