Hamza Abdelkarim becomes first Egyptian to feature for Barcelona’s senior side

Hamza Abdelkarim made football history on Monday by becoming the first Egyptian player to appear for Barcelona’s first team in an official match, coming on during the club’s 5-2 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano.

The young forward was introduced by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick in the 86th minute, replacing Brazil international Raphinha. His appearance marked Abdelkarim’s competitive debut for the Catalan club, only weeks after he was promoted to the senior squad following an impressive pre-season campaign.

Abdelkarim’s first-team bow represents a landmark moment for Egyptian football. No Egyptian player had previously featured for Barcelona in a competitive fixture, with the club regarded as one of the most successful and prominent in world football.

His historic introduction came during a match in which Barcelona recovered from an early setback to claim a convincing victory. Rayo Vallecano took the lead through Sergio Camello, but the hosts responded when Raphinha levelled the score.

Lamine Yamal then put Barcelona ahead with an outstanding goal before the home side extended their advantage through an own goal from Florian Lejeune. Rayo Vallecano remained in contention after Camello scored again to reduce the deficit.

Raphinha restored Barcelona’s two-goal advantage in the 71st minute, before Yamal completed the scoring with a fifth goal in the closing stages.

Although Abdelkarim was given only a few minutes on the pitch, his introduction confirmed his rapid progress since arriving at Barcelona from Al Ahly several months ago. He quickly attracted attention within the club and impressed Flick sufficiently to earn a place in the senior squad.

The German manager then handed him the opportunity to make history in Spain’s top flight, completing a rise that has taken the young Egyptian from a new arrival at Barcelona to an official first-team player in a short period.

Abdelkarim’s promotion followed a strong showing during preparations for the new season, where his performances helped convince the coaching staff that he was ready to train and compete alongside Barcelona’s senior players.

The match against Rayo Vallecano therefore carried significance beyond the final score. Barcelona secured three points after overturning an early deficit, while Abdelkarim established a new milestone for Egyptian players at the club with his official debut.

His appearance also places him among the latest young players to receive an opportunity under Flick as Barcelona continue to introduce emerging talent into the first team.
