Genoa explore reunion with former academy winger Stephan El Shaarawy
Italy and Egypt winger Stephan El Shaarawy, currently without a club after leaving Roma, is being linked with a return to Genoa in a possible Serie A move.
The 33-year-old left-sided forward became unattached on 1 July 2026, bringing his latest spell at Roma to an end. Genoa would represent a return to the club where El Shaarawy began his senior career after progressing from their Under-19 side.
El Shaarawy has made 345 Serie A appearances, scoring 73 goals and providing 43 assists. He has also played in the Champions League and Europa League during a career that has included spells with AC Milan, Monaco, Roma and Chinese side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.
His second spell at Roma began in January 2021, when he returned from Shanghai on a free transfer. He helped the club win the Conference League in the 2021-22 season and was part of the Roma squad that finished as Europa League runners-up the following campaign.
El Shaarawy’s market value is listed at €2.4m, while his previous highest valuation was €30m. A move to Genoa would reunite him with the club where he made his early breakthrough and offer a new destination after his departure from Roma.
The reported interest remains at the rumour stage, with El Shaarawy currently without a club.
