Former football superstar and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Samuel Eto’o, found himself at the center of speculation as reports emerged regarding his resignation. This announcement came on the heels of Cameroon’s disappointing performance in the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast.
The Cameroonian Football Federation officially communicated the development through a press release published on its official website. According to the statement, Samuel Eto’o tendered his resignation to the members of the federal executive body during a meeting.
However, in an unexpected twist, the executive committee, known as the Comex, unanimously rejected Eto’o’s resignation, renewing their confidence in the football legend to carry out his duties as president.
“At the start of the said meeting, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation, Mr. Eto’o Fils Samuel, presented his resignation to the members of the federal executive body, inviting them to do the same with all soul and conscience.
At the end of the discussions and the ensuing deliberation, the members of the Executive Committee decided to continue their current mandates and subsequently unanimously rejected the resignation of the President of the Cameroon Football Federation,” the statement read.
The Comex emphasized its commitment to maintaining the current momentum of reconstruction and development of Cameroonian football, aligning with Eto’o’s acclaimed project outlined during the elective General Assembly held on December 11.
Samuel Eto’o, renowned for his illustrious playing career with clubs like FC Barcelona and Inter Milan, has transitioned into a leadership role within the football administration. Despite the initial resignation attempt, it appears that he will remain at the helm of FECAFOOT, steering the course for the sport’s growth and development in Cameroon.
