Sevilla FC, the Spanish football club, returned home with three valuable points on Monday in their efforts to steer clear of the danger zone, defeating hosts Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in the culmination of the 23rd round of the league.
The Andalusian team raised their tally to 20 points in the 15th position, with a 3-point margin from the relegation spots currently occupied by Cadiz.
Meanwhile, the hosts remain in the 13th position with 24 points.
Sevilla took the lead with the first goal courtesy of their Moroccan striker Youssef El-Nesyri, who returned to action after his national team’s exit from the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Shortly after, Spanish winger Bryan Gil equalized for Rayo Vallecano in the 29th minute. However, El-Nesyri returned to find the net once again, scoring the second goal just before halftime in the 45th minute.
Despite both teams’ efforts, especially Rayo Vallecano, who dominated possession with 67%, the score remained unchanged until the referee blew the final whistle.
The victory marks a crucial step for Sevilla in their bid to maintain a safe distance from the relegation battle. El-Nesyri’s brace proved pivotal, showcasing his prowess in front of goal and contributing significantly to his team’s success.
With this win, Sevilla aims to build momentum and continue their climb up the league table in the remaining fixtures of the season.
