Bruno Fernandes stars as Manchester United turn Ipswich defeat into 5-1 rout

Manchester United recovered from an early setback in emphatic fashion, beating Ipswich Town 5-1 at Old Trafford to claim their first Premier League victory of the season under manager Michael Carrick.

Bruno Fernandes was the outstanding player, scoring a hat-trick as United overturned Leif Davis’ opening goal and took control of the match. Bryan Mbeumo completed the win late on after being played through by the Manchester United captain.

United dominated possession and territory from the opening stages, but it was Ipswich who struck first in the 29th minute. Davis produced an excellent finish, sending a powerful effort against the underside of the crossbar and into the net to put the visitors ahead.

The goal briefly disrupted United’s momentum, but the hosts responded before half-time. Fernandes capitalised on a serious defensive mistake by Ipswich in the 40th minute, broke clear of the defence and calmly found the net to restore parity.

The teams went into the interval level at 1-1, but United returned for the second half with greater intensity and quickly began to overwhelm their opponents.

Their pressure was rewarded in the 56th minute when Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net after attempting to deal with a delivery inside the penalty area. United’s celebrations were briefly interrupted while the referee consulted the video assistant referee over a possible handball at the beginning of the move, but the goal was eventually allowed to stand.

A few minutes later, United were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the Ipswich area. Fernandes took responsibility and converted from the spot in the 61st minute to put his side in front for the first time.

The Portugal international completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute. A Bryan Mbeumo attempt inside the box rebounded into Fernandes’ path, and he made no mistake with the finish, prompting loud celebrations from the Old Trafford crowd.

United continued to attack despite having established a comfortable lead. Ipswich goalkeeper Kiel Scherpen made a series of important saves to deny Marcus Rashford, Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu, preventing the scoreline from becoming even more severe.

Mbeumo eventually added the fifth goal in the 82nd minute. Fernandes supplied a precise pass that released the forward behind the defence, and Mbeumo lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to complete a composed finish.

United continued to search for further goals during the closing stages, but Scherpen’s performance ensured there was no additional damage for Ipswich.

The result erased the disappointment of Manchester United’s opening-round defeat by Hull City and offered an immediate response from Carrick’s side. It was also a standout individual display from captain Fernandes, whose three goals and assist helped United record a convincing victory and underline their potential to compete strongly this season.
