Lebogang Mabotja joins Gomora United ahead of 2026/27 season

Former Marumo Gallants left-back Lebogang Mabotja has completed a move to Motsepe Foundation Championship club Gomora United for the 2026/27 season, with Soccer Laduma confirming that the experienced defender has signed for the second-tier side.

Mabotja, 34, had been training with Gomora United for several weeks while the club considered a possible agreement. That process has now been concluded, allowing the former Marumo Gallants player to formally join the club.

The defender confirmed the move to Soccer Laduma and explained that Gomora United had approached him because they wanted him to contribute his experience to the squad.

“Yes, I did (sign). They asked me to help,” Mabotja confirmed.

The signing comes after Gomora United finished 13th in their first season in the second tier. That result left the club only just above the relegation zone and underlined the need for greater experience as they prepare for the new campaign.

Gomora boss Joe Seanego had previously spoken about the importance of adding experienced players to the squad. Mabotja’s arrival gives the club a defender with a substantial record in both the top flight and the second tier of South African football.

He made 149 appearances for Marumo Gallants during his time with the club. Mabotja also played 20 Betway Premiership matches for Bahlabane Ba Ntwa last season before he was released.

His career has additionally included spells with Sekhukhune United, Black Leopards and Baroka, among others. That background means he brings experience of playing for several established South African clubs, as well as knowledge of the demands of competing at different levels of the domestic game.

Gomora United will hope Mabotja can provide leadership and defensive stability as they attempt to improve on last season’s 13th-place finish. His signing is part of the club’s effort to strengthen its squad with players capable of helping the team move away from the relegation battle and climb the Motsepe Foundation Championship table.

For Mabotja, the move represents the next stage of a career that has included extended service at Marumo Gallants, appearances in the Betway Premiership and previous spells with Sekhukhune United, Black Leopards and Baroka.

The agreement has now been finalised after his period of training with Gomora United, and the veteran left-back will be part of the club’s plans for the 2026/27 season.
