La Liga reports abusive chants targeting Pedro Sanchez, Spain and Barcelona at opening-round matches

La Liga has condemned abusive chants aimed at Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at three stadiums, while insults directed at Spain and the national team were reported at two other grounds after the opening two rounds of the top two divisions.

The league published its weekly complaints to the Spanish Football Federation’s Competitions Committee and the National Anti-Violence Commission, detailing chants heard during matches which it said encouraged violence, contained abuse or promoted intolerance.

Among the incidents reported were chants aimed at Sanchez, including “Pedro Sanchez, son of a bitch”. They were heard at three fixtures in the second round: Atletico de Madrid’s match against Villarreal at the Metropolitano, Getafe’s meeting with Racing at the Coliseum, and Granada’s game against Real Mallorca at Los Carmenes.

The reports also recorded chants of “Spain, son of a bitch” and “national team, son of a bitch” during two matches. Those incidents took place at Camp Nou during Barcelona’s first-round fixture against Athletic Club and at El Sadar during Osasuna’s second-round game against Levante.

Additional chants directed at Barcelona and Catalonia were reported at the Metropolitano, including “Barcelona, son of a bitch” and “Catalonia, son of a bitch”.

The RCDE Stadium was also mentioned in the complaints following Espanyol’s matches against Elche and Real Madrid. Chants reported there included: “He is a great pilot, divine landing, come on Taliban, send planes to Camp Nou.”

A further set of chants was reported at El Sadar. They referred to La Romareda as a “pigsty”, included insults aimed at authorities and police, and contained threats involving a bomb and the 2004 Madrid train attacks.

The full chant included: “La Romareda, fucking pigsty, where the police and the authorities meet. What a fucking smell, what filth, with a bomb it will all fly into the air, an explosion like 11-M, and let Aragon go to hell. Osasuna enjoys watching that fucking Zaragoza burn.”

La Liga said the chants fell within conduct prohibited under both the Spanish Football Federation’s sporting disciplinary code and legislation covering violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.

The league’s complaints are submitted each week to the relevant disciplinary and anti-violence bodies. They cover incidents identified at matches in Spain’s first and second divisions and are intended to support potential action against behaviour considered abusive, violent or discriminatory.

The reports were published after the completion of the first two rounds of fixtures. They included incidents involving political abuse, hostility towards national and regional identities, and references to violence and terrorist attacks.
