South African coach Eric Tinkler has won his first trophy in Ghanaian football after guiding Asante Kotoko to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup.

The Porcupine Warriors defeated fierce rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Friday night to claim the third edition of the competition.

The triumph gives Tinkler an early piece of silverware during his time in Ghana and adds another chapter to the long-standing rivalry between Kotoko and Hearts.

Kotoko prevail in penalty shootout

The two Ghanaian giants could not be separated during normal time, forcing the prestigious showdown to be decided from the penalty spot.

Kotoko held their nerve to win the shootout 4-1 and secure the Democracy Cup in front of their home supporters.

The victory represents Tinkler’s first trophy since taking charge of the Kumasi-based club, providing an encouraging start to his tenure.
