Mohamed Salah breaks silence after Trabzonspor’s European exit

Mohamed Salah has spoken publicly for the first time since Trabzonspor were eliminated from the Europa League, insisting that the club’s heavy defeat by Ferencvarosi will not alter his commitment to the project.

Trabzonspor’s hopes of progressing ended after they lost both legs of their tie against the Hungarian side. They were beaten 1-0 at home in the first match before suffering a far more damaging 4-0 defeat away on Thursday.

The result brought a disappointing conclusion to Trabzonspor’s attempt to advance in the competition and prompted Salah to address the setback in a message posted on his X account.

“Nothing in my career ever came easy. Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies.”

Salah also reaffirmed his connection with the Turkish club, making clear that the loss had not weakened his belief in its long-term plans.

“Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. Last night will not change that.”

He acknowledged the pressure surrounding the team and the expectations placed upon it, while maintaining that Trabzonspor could still fulfil its ambitions.

“I know expectations are high, and I truly believe we are capable and will achieve our goals.”

The Egypt international ended his statement by emphasising the seriousness of his motivation and the meaning behind his decision to join Trabzonspor.

“The phrase ‘I came here to win’ is not just a slogan for me.”

The message represented Salah’s first public response to the European disappointment after Trabzonspor conceded four goals in the second leg. Their opening defeat had left the tie finely balanced only in terms of the scoreline, but the second meeting produced a decisive result in favour of Ferencvarosi.

Trabzonspor were unable to recover from the early deficit and were ultimately beaten 5-0 on aggregate across the two matches. The home defeat had come in front of their own supporters, making the subsequent result in Hungary particularly damaging for the club.

Despite the result, Salah’s comments focused on resilience rather than blame. He presented difficult evenings and disappointment as part of football, while saying that such experiences could be used as motivation for future success.

He also repeated his belief in Trabzonspor’s project and made it clear that one unsuccessful European tie would not change his position. His message combined an acceptance of the scale of the setback with a public declaration that he remains fully committed to helping the club reach its targets.
