Yael Trebi leaves hospital after 48-hour coma following Sardinia pool accident

The Cagliari striker Yael Trebi has been discharged from hospital in good condition after spending almost two weeks receiving treatment for a swimming pool accident that threatened his life and could have ended his career before it had begun.

The French forward left the Santissima Annunziata University Hospital in Sassari after overcoming the most serious stage of his recovery. He had been admitted to intensive care following the incident and spent 48 hours in a medically induced coma.

The accident happened on 16 August at a villa in Baja Sardinia, close to the Costa Smeralda. Trebi nearly drowned in the swimming pool and was airlifted to hospital by emergency services after receiving rapid assistance at the scene.

Doctors initially placed the young player in intensive care. After he regained consciousness, he began a gradual recovery and was later moved to the respiratory medicine ward to continue his treatment. Medical assessments found no significant physical damage.

Professor Pietro Perina, director of the clinical and interventional respiratory medicine department at Sassari University Hospital, said in a medical statement published by Sky Sport: “The patient is leaving the hospital in generally good clinical condition, after a course of treatment that showed a gradual and significant recovery.”

He added: “The examinations carried out during his hospital stay showed an improvement in his condition, allowing us to plan his discharge with peace of mind. If some people have spoken in recent days of a miracle, we prefer to speak of the work of a system that has proved effective.”

Trebi left the hospital accompanied by his mother and smiling broadly. Before departing, he said goodbye to members of the medical team, as well as the hospital’s general manager and medical director.

His next destination is expected to be Arco in the province of Trento, where he will continue his rehabilitation programme. He will then undergo further detailed examinations to assess whether he can return to competitive sport and regain the level of fitness required to play again.

The incident occurred during what had been a holiday in Sardinia but quickly turned into a medical emergency. Without the intervention of the emergency teams and the helicopter transfer to hospital, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

Trebi’s release marks an important step in his recovery, although his eventual return to football will depend on the outcome of the further medical checks and rehabilitation process. Cagliari and their supporters can now take encouragement from his progress after several extremely difficult days in which his life was at risk.
