Orlando Pirates face creative midfield decision after losing two number 10s

Orlando Pirates have lost two players capable of operating in the number 10 role during the same transfer window, leaving head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou with an important decision to make as the Buccaneers seek to defend their Betway Premiership title and compete for honours in Africa.

Patrick Maswanganyi’s move to Bahrain was confirmed earlier this week, despite the midfielder having started every match for Pirates so far this season. His departure follows the agreement for Relebohile Mofokeng to join Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The two exits have left Pirates considering whether to recruit a replacement before the transfer window closes or trust the options already within their squad.

One possibility is Appollis, who could be asked to take on the number 10 position if the Buccaneers decide against entering the transfer market. He offers a different profile from Maswanganyi but has the ability to score goals and create chances for his team-mates.

Appollis’ attacking qualities could make him a natural candidate to provide creativity in the role, although his style would not replicate what Maswanganyi brought to the side.

Another option is De Jong, who impressed as a key creative player in the number 10 position during his time at Stellenbosch FC. He has yet to be given a sustained opportunity to demonstrate what he can contribute to Pirates in that role.

With the club’s choices limited following the departures of Maswanganyi and Mofokeng, Ouaddou may look to the New Zealander to reproduce the performances he delivered for Stellenbosch FC.

Pirates could also consider promoting a young player who made a strong impression in the DStv Diski Challenge last year. The youngster was one of the club’s standout performers in the competition and is regarded as someone who could develop into an important member of the senior team.

His confidence in possession and ability to find promising positions are among the qualities that have encouraged that belief. However, the player’s name was not identified in the available report.

The transfer window remains open, meaning Pirates still have time to strengthen the position if they decide that an additional number 10 is required. The club has been linked with Emile Witbooi, who generally plays as a winger but could also operate centrally because of his creativity and assurance on the ball.

Witbooi would not necessarily be a direct replacement for Maswanganyi, but his versatility could give Ouaddou another attacking option as Pirates prepare for the demands of domestic title defence and African competition.

For now, the Buccaneers must weigh the benefits of trusting their existing squad against the need to bring in a specialist before the deadline. With Maswanganyi having been a regular starter and Mofokeng’s move to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise already agreed, the number 10 position has become one of the key issues facing Orlando Pirates.
