Abrahams reveals Da Cruz’ instructions after lively Kaizer Chiefs debut

Kaizer Chiefs winger Faiz Abrahams says head coach Fernando da Cruz told him to play without restriction when he came on during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Richards Bay FC.

The 21-year-old made his long-awaited first appearance for Amakhosi at the Princess Magogo Stadium after joining the club on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch FC.

Abrahams was introduced in the 66th minute, replacing Luke Baartman, with Chiefs trailing 2-1. Da Cruz asked him to use the width of the pitch, attack directly and help create the opportunities needed to bring his side back into the game.

“It was my first time travelling with Kaizer Chiefs,” Abrahams told the club’s website.

“It felt good to be included, and I appreciate the coach’s belief in me. I have worked hard since I arrived and I am grateful for the support I have received and honoured to be playing for this great Club.”

The substitution gave Chiefs greater attacking momentum as Abrahams produced an energetic cameo during the final 24 minutes.

The winger showed confidence in possession and delivered two accurate crosses into the penalty area, both of which found striker Wandile Duba as Chiefs pressed for an equaliser.

His contribution formed part of a strong late spell for the visitors, who eventually secured a share of the points after recovering from the deficit.

“The coach told me to go out there and create chances for us to get back into the game.

“I think I made a few opportunities that we might have scored from, so I am quite happy with how I did,” he added.

Abrahams’ debut came after he had spent time waiting for his opportunity since moving to Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC. His first appearance was also his first time travelling with the club for a competitive fixture.

While his individual performance offered encouragement, the result left Kaizer Chiefs with ground to make up in the Betway Premiership title race.

Both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns won their respective matches, meaning Chiefs were unable to keep pace with their championship rivals after dropping two points against Richards Bay FC.

The draw followed a match in which Chiefs’ mistakes were criticised by Da Cruz, adding to the frustration surrounding the result. Despite their late response, Amakhosi now face a more demanding challenge on the Betway Premiership log table as they attempt to stay within reach of the leading sides.

For Abrahams, however, the performance provided a positive start to his Kaizer Chiefs career. His direct running, willingness to attack from wide areas and ability to deliver into the box gave Da Cruz another attacking option for the matches ahead.
