Mamelodi Sundowns tie down Thato Sibiya with long-term deal despite Lille loan

Mamelodi Sundowns have moved to secure the long-term future of Thato Sibiya by handing the 20-year-old a new contract, despite his departure for French Ligue 1 side Lille OSC on a season-long loan.

The South African champions confirmed the agreement as part of a move that strengthens their position over one of their emerging talents while allowing Sibiya to continue his development in European football.

Sibiya has joined Lille for the current campaign, with the French club holding an option to make his transfer permanent once the loan spell ends at the conclusion of the season.

However, Sundowns’ decision to extend his contract means they remain firmly in control of his future should Lille decide to pursue a permanent transfer or another club enter the race for his services.

Lille face a bigger price tag

The new deal effectively gives Sundowns greater leverage in negotiations over Sibiya, particularly if the youngster impresses during his time in France and attracts interest from other clubs.

Crucially, the contract is understood to include a buy-out clause, meaning Lille or any other potential suitor will have to trigger the stipulated figure if they want to secure the midfielder permanently.

That could put Sundowns in a stronger financial position than they would have been had Sibiya entered the final year of his previous contract while on loan in France.

The move also ensures that the Brazilians retain a significant stake in the player’s future at a time when his development is entering a potentially important phase.

Sundowns confirm new contract

Announcing the agreement, Sundowns said: “Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce that Thato Sibiya has signed a new long-term contract with the club.”

The club also confirmed the arrangement with Lille, adding: “Mamelodi Sundowns have also reached an agreement with French Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille for Thato to join the club on a season-long loan. We wish Thato all the best for the season ahead and his next challenge in France.”

For Sibiya, the move represents an opportunity to test himself in one of Europe’s top domestic leagues while remaining contractually tied to Sundowns.

For the Brazilians, meanwhile, the new agreement provides protection around one of their young assets and could prove particularly valuable if the 20-year-old makes a strong impression in France.
