Egypt legend Hossam Mido criticises Omar Marmoush’s Manchester City move

Egyptian football legend Ahmed Hossam Mido has criticised Omar Marmoush’s decision to join Manchester City, insisting that the move was a mistake.

Marmoush is now expected to join Tottenham Hotspur on loan, with Spurs reportedly set to have an obligation to buy the Egyptian for £50 million, plus a further £10 million in potential add-ons.

Mido believes the move to Tottenham could give Marmoush the opportunity to revive his career after struggling for consistent minutes at Manchester City.

“I think his move to Manchester City was a mistake for him, because he needed to play, and he is now 27 years old, which is the best period of his career as a player,” Mido said.

The former Tottenham striker remains confident that Marmoush can succeed in North London and quickly become a favourite among the club’s supporters.

“I am confident and sure that he will play well with Tottenham and the fans there will love him,” he added.

Mido also believes Marmoush is best suited to playing from the left wing in the Premier League rather than operating as a traditional striker.

“Left wing. In Germany, he played as a striker and excelled and scored goals, but in the English Premier League, I think his best position is as a left winger,” he explained.

According to Mido, Marmoush’s ability to combine with teammates and move into central areas makes him particularly effective from the left.

“He is good at linking up with his teammates, and is able to move into the center to become a second striker,” he said.

However, Mido believes Marmoush must be used in a role that allows him to exploit space rather than playing with his back to goal.

“Omar is not special when he plays with his back to the goal. He needs to play between the lines, in spaces, and into the penalty area, so that he has the opportunity to shoot, but he can also serve as a striker,” he added.

Mido also stressed that confidence will be crucial if Marmoush is to make the most of his opportunity at Tottenham.

“We know very well that the strength of a striker is related to his self-confidence. If Omar Marmoush gains confidence, he will add a lot to Tottenham,” he said.

Despite his criticism, Mido believes Tottenham would be getting a player with the right mentality and professionalism.

“But what I can guarantee to Spurs fans is that they have acquired a distinguished professional and a great goalscorer with a distinctive mentality,” he said.

“I think Tottenham needs players who have a winning mentality and are ready to die for the team, and I see Omar Marmoush as one of those types of players.”
