Tottenham close in on £60m Omar Marmoush deal as Mido backs former pupil

Tottenham are closing in on a deal to sign Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Manchester City for about £60m, with the move expected to begin as a loan containing an obligation to buy subject to certain conditions.

Marmoush has been given permission by Manchester City to undergo a medical with Tottenham, according to The Athletic, and said goodbye to his City team-mates on Wednesday morning before moving to the London club.

The Egypt international is expected to sign a four-year contract with the option of a further season. Tottenham are keen to complete the transfer quickly so Marmoush can be available for Saturday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United.

Newcastle are Marmoush’s favourite opponents, with the 27-year-old having scored seven goals against them.

Former Egypt and Tottenham striker Ahmed Hossam “Mido”, who gave Marmoush his senior debut at Wadi Degla when he was 16, believes the forward can make a significant impact in Roberto De Zerbi’s attack.

“Tottenham have signed a wonderful player. Marmoush is a top-class goalscorer who can score goals, while he works extremely hard for the team and is highly professional,” Mido told talkSPORT.

“I gave Marmoush his debut when he was 16 years old with Wadi Degla. I always believed in him and thought he would become a great player.”

Mido said Tottenham needed a player with Marmoush’s qualities because he would offer De Zerbi a different attacking option.

“I think Tottenham need a player of this quality because he will give De Zerbi a different option in attack. He can play as a striker as well as a left winger,” he said.

“Marmoush is hungry for success, and I also think he needs Tottenham. Things did not work out for him at Manchester City, and I believe moving to City was the wrong decision because he needed to play regularly.”

Mido added that Marmoush was entering the best period of his career and would quickly win over Tottenham supporters.

“Marmoush is now at the best stage of his career. He is 27 and has reached his prime years. I am confident he will start strongly with Tottenham and score goals, and the fans will love him.”

Asked about Marmoush’s best position, Mido said: “He is a left winger, and he has always been a left winger. In Germany, when he played as a striker, he scored a lot of goals, but I believe his best position in the Premier League is left wing.”

“He is very good at linking play between the lines, getting into the penalty area and shooting. He can also arrive at the far post as a second striker.”

“Marmoush is not at his best when he plays with his back to goal. He needs to receive the ball in space, run in behind defenders and get the chance to shoot, but he can also play the role of a striker.”

Mido concluded: “A striker relies heavily on confidence. If Marmoush gets the confidence and the opportunities to score goals, he will do his job for Tottenham. I can assure Tottenham fans they have signed a professional player and a top-class goalscorer. He will also add mental strength to the team because he is one of those players who want to win and are ready to make sacrifices for the team.”

Tottenham’s proposed move for Marmoush would take their summer spending close to £400m. The club have already confirmed the signing of Savinho from Manchester City, with the transfer announced on Tuesday. Tottenham did not disclose the fee, although reports have estimated it at more than £75m.

The club view Marmoush as a key part of their plans to rebuild the attack under De Zerbi.

Marmoush joined Manchester City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025. He has made 62 appearances for City, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists, and won both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup with the club.

Tottenham began their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Brentford on Saturday.
