Deportivo make late approach for free agent Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez is considering an unexpected move to Spain, with Deportivo de La Coruna reportedly interested in signing the former Manchester City winger in the final hours of the transfer window.

The 35-year-old Algeria international has been without a club since leaving Al-Ahli and has several options in the Middle East. However, according to Spanish journalist Juan Arrien, Deportivo are willing to explore a deal for Mahrez as they prepare for their return to La Liga.

The Galician club have already placed considerable emphasis on experience in their squad. They have signed Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 37, as well as Adama Traore, the 30-year-old Spain international of Malian origin.

Mahrez would fit that recruitment strategy. His technical ability, close control and left foot could suit the Spanish league, while his experience would be valuable to a side whose primary aim is likely to be avoiding relegation.

Deportivo began their season with consecutive draws against Elche and Malaga, both matches ending 1-1. Aubameyang scored both of their goals.

The main difficulty in any possible agreement is likely to be Mahrez’s salary.

Al-Wasl, from the United Arab Emirates, are reportedly prepared to offer him a two-year contract with the option of a further season. The proposed package would be worth about 7m euros per year, excluding bonuses.

That figure would be significantly higher than Aubameyang’s reported earnings at Deportivo, with the striker understood to be receiving approximately 4.5m euros per season in La Coruna.

Mahrez would therefore probably have to accept a substantial reduction in his salary if he is serious about pursuing what could be his final European adventure.

The Spanish proposal is not the only option available to him. Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Shabab and Al-Ettifaq are also reported to have opened discussions with the former Manchester City player in an attempt to persuade him to remain in Saudi Arabia.

Mahrez is familiar with the competition after spending three seasons at Al-Ahli. During that period, he recorded 37 goals and 46 assists in 122 appearances.

The Saudi clubs could offer annual wages of around 10m dollars, creating a clear choice for the winger: remain in the Gulf under highly attractive financial terms or return to Europe for one more challenge.

Mahrez has also announced that he will retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup, meaning he will no longer have the same selection considerations influencing his club decision.

A move to La Liga, particularly with a historic club such as Deportivo, could nevertheless prove difficult to turn down if Mahrez wants to test himself in Europe one final time.
