Barcelona’s Camp Nou leads race to host 2029 Champions League final

Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona, is currently the leading candidate to host the 2029 UEFA Champions League final, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

FC Barcelona submitted an official bid to UEFA in June to stage the showpiece match at its iconic stadium. The club’s proposal was prepared in partnership with Barcelona City Council and the Government of Catalonia, with the support of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Mundo Deportivo reports that UEFA is particularly attracted by the prospect of staging the biggest match in European club football in front of 104,600 spectators. The report adds that the redevelopment work currently taking place at Camp Nou is not considered an obstacle, with UEFA understood to have full details of the project.

FC Barcelona said in an official statement that its bid contains all the technical, contractual and institutional requirements requested by UEFA. It also includes the necessary guarantees confirming that both the city of Barcelona and Camp Nou would be able to organise one of the world’s major sporting events.

The submission means the formal application phase has now been completed. UEFA will next assess the various bids before selecting the stadium that will host the 2029 final.

FC Barcelona’s statement highlighted Barcelona’s extensive experience of staging major international sporting events. It also described Camp Nou as a world-class stadium with a long history of hosting some of the biggest competitions in European and global football.

The ground is currently undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment, which the club says will place it among the most modern and prominent sporting venues in the world once the work is complete.

FC Barcelona and the other institutions involved in the bid are now waiting for UEFA’s final decision. Several other proposals are also competing to stage the final, with the host stadium expected to be announced during the final quarter of this year.
