Deportivo La Coruna consider shock move for former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez could become one of the most notable names available before the end of the transfer window, with Deportivo La Coruna reportedly considering a move for the Algeria international.

Mahrez has been without a club since leaving Al Ahli and, according to Spanish journalist Hwang-Chi To, the Galician club have identified him as a potential target. Deportivo are understood to be interested in making a major statement by securing the services of the former Manchester City player.

The proposal would represent an ambitious move for Deportivo La Coruna, although there are significant doubts over whether the deal is financially realistic. Mahrez’s salary is viewed as the first major obstacle, with the Spanish club unable to match the resources available to teams in the Gulf region.

Several clubs from that region are also interested and could offer Mahrez considerably more attractive financial terms. Saudi Pro League sides Al Shabab and Al Ettifaq are in discussions with the Algeria international, according to an exclusive report by Africafoot.

That competition means Deportivo will need to present a persuasive sporting and personal case if they are to convince Mahrez to choose a return to Spain over more lucrative offers. The club must find a way to make the prospect of a new challenge in La Coruna appeal to a player who has already enjoyed success at the highest level.

Mahrez, 35, still possesses extensive top-level experience and a profile that could bring considerable quality to an ambitious side. His technical ability, attacking experience and record at major clubs would make him a high-profile addition for Deportivo if the proposed move were to materialise.

For now, however, the idea remains at the stage of an ambitious transfer possibility rather than an advanced agreement. The key question is whether Deportivo’s interest can develop into a workable operation before the window closes.

The club are also preparing for their next league fixture. Deportivo La Coruna are due to face Valencia CF in the third round of the Spanish league season.

Betting company 1xbet has published odds for the match, listing Deportivo La Coruna at 2.50 to win, a draw at 3.10 and Valencia CF at 3.00.
