Sipho Mbule enjoying career revival after move to Iraq, says agent

Sipho Mbule’s strong start with Zakho SC is giving the midfielder a renewed sense of happiness and purpose after his move away from South Africa, according to his agent Mike Makaab.

The 28-year-old left Orlando Pirates at the end of last season before making the unexpected switch to Iraq, where he joined top-flight side Zakho SC. Mbule has quickly established himself in the centre of midfield and has been described as the club’s “Master Chef” because of his influence on their play.

He made his mark on the scoresheet at the weekend, opening his account for Zakho SC with a spectacular long-range effort against Diyala. He also supplied an assist in the same match to complete an impressive individual display.

Makaab said Mbule’s form reflected the midfielder’s improved physical condition and, more importantly, his mindset since arriving in Iraq.

“I think the most important thing is that he is happy. He is happy, he is committed and he sees it as a great opportunity to…I hate to use the word, but to revive his career.

“He is in really good physical shape and he has settled in pretty well. He was telling me the crowd is insane. He said they are incredibly passionate. So, he has really settled in nicely, in every sense of the word,” Makaab told Soccer Laduma.

Mbule’s challenge now will be to maintain that level of performance rather than allowing his bright beginning to become a short-lived spell of form.

Makaab believes the midfielder is benefiting from the experience of playing in a completely unfamiliar football environment for the first time in his career.

“I think it’s a brand new environment for him. It’s the first time he has ever played football outside South Africa, so it’s almost like a young person taking in the new environment and enjoying the moment. That’s what’s happening with Sipho. He is honestly really happy.”

The move marks a significant change for Mbule, who previously played for SuperSport United before joining Orlando Pirates. His performances in Iraq could now create further opportunities if he continues to impress throughout the season.

Interest could come from other clubs across Asia, while a sustained run of form may also revive the possibility of a move to Europe. Many observers have long believed that Mbule possesses the ability to play at a higher level overseas, and a successful campaign with Zakho SC could strengthen that view.

For now, the priority is to build on his first goal and assist, remain physically sharp and continue adapting to life in Iraq. His agent’s assessment is that Mbule has settled well, is committed to the opportunity and is enjoying his football again qualities that have helped produce his “red-hot” start.
