Stormers loan move for Faf de Klerk ruled out by Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn

Cheetahs coach Frans Steyn has dismissed reports that Springbok scrumhalf Faf de Klerk could join the Stormers on loan, confirming the player will remain with the Free State-based franchise in Bloemfontein.

The Stormers are short of options at scrumhalf ahead of the upcoming United Rugby Championship season. Imad Khan suffered a long-term knee injury against the All Blacks at the beginning of August, while Cobus Reinach remains part of the Springbok equation. Veteran scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage has also retired.

Reports on Sunday claimed the Stormers were in discussions with the Cheetahs over a possible move for De Klerk. Steyn acknowledged that talks had taken place, but insisted they would not result in the experienced scrumhalf moving to the Cape.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Steyn was unequivocal about De Klerk’s immediate future.

“Faf isn’t going to the Cape. He is staying with Free State.”

The statement ends speculation that the Stormers could bring De Klerk in as cover while they deal with their shortage at number nine. The Cape-based franchise will now have to explore other options before the start of the new United Rugby Championship campaign.

De Klerk has been in excellent form for the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup, which helped prompt the reports linking him with a temporary move to the Stormers. However, Steyn’s comments make clear that the Cheetahs intend to keep hold of the scrumhalf.

The 32-year-old’s continued presence is significant for the Free State side, particularly given his current form and the interest surrounding the Stormers’ scrumhalf position. Despite the discussions between the two franchises, De Klerk is set to remain in Bloemfontein.

The Stormers’ need for a halfback has been heightened by the combination of Khan’s injury, Reinach’s involvement in the Springbok set-up and Duvenage’s retirement. With De Klerk no longer an option, the franchise must look elsewhere to strengthen its squad for the United Rugby Championship season.

Steyn’s comments also provide clarity after a weekend of speculation over what would have been a notable move between two South African franchises. For now, De Klerk’s focus remains with the Cheetahs, where he has continued to impress in the Currie Cup.
