Lille v PSG: Champions League contenders meet as Paris chase first league win

Friday’s meeting between Lille OSC and Paris Saint-Germain presents an immediate test for both sides, with Lille looking to build on a winning start and the French champions seeking their first Ligue 1 victory of the 2026-27 season. Lille opened their campaign with a convincing 2-0 win at Angers on Sunday, 23 August. Olivier Giroud put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute before Tiago Santos added a second 20 minutes later. Lille also kept a clean sheet, giving new head coach Davide Ancelotti a successful start in his first competitive match in charge.

The result strengthened the positive impression created during pre-season, when Lille recorded two wins and two draws in five matches. The club finished third in Ligue 1 last season and will also compete in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League from September, increasing the importance of this early domestic test.

Lille have won three of their past six matches and will take confidence from playing at home. Their next opponents, however, have traditionally had the upper hand in this fixture in recent seasons.

PSG were held to a 2-2 draw by Rennes in their opening Ligue 1 match. The champions fell 2-0 behind before Ferran Torres scored twice in the second half, finding the net in the 71st and 83rd minutes to rescue a point.

Torres made his first appearance for PSG in that match and immediately became an important attacking option for Luis Enrique. The Spain forward’s double prevented defeat, but PSG’s overall start has been uneven. Across their three competitive matches this season, they have recorded one victory, one defeat and one draw.

Their campaign began with a 2-1 win against Aston Villa in the Super Cup on 12 August. PSG then lost 1-0 to Lens in the Trophee des Champions before being forced to come from behind at Rennes.

Paris will now look to raise their performance level at Lille. The match brings together two clubs who have qualified for the next UEFA Champions League, although PSG arrive with two defeats in their past four away matches.

Lille are expected to welcome back captain Andre, who plays in midfield, and forward Fernandez-Pardo. Fernandez-Pardo is reportedly keen to leave the club, following the departure of midfielder Bouaddi, whose transfer to Manchester City is due to be officially confirmed shortly.

Long-term absentee Igamane remains unavailable. New signing Nianzou, who joined from Sevilla FC, could be included in the squad after missing the trip to Angers. The centre-back, who was developed at PSG, was expected to return to training during the week.

Alexsandro and Ngoy are expected to form Lille’s central defensive partnership, a position weakened by Mandi’s move to Levante. On the left wing, Onal, formerly of NEC Nijmegen, is competing for another starting place.

PSG will be without several players for the trip. Nuno Mendes is suspended, while Mbaye and Barcola are expected to remain out of the squad, partly because of ongoing transfer-market developments. Liverpool are reportedly interested in Barcola.

Ousmane Dembele is another significant absentee and will not travel to Lille. Even without him, PSG retain considerable attacking quality, with Torres already demonstrating his ability to influence matches and Luis Enrique able to call on several players capable of making the difference.

PSG have not lost to Lille since August 2021. Since Lille’s 1-0 victory in the 2021 Trophee des Champions, the Paris club have won eight and drawn two of the sides’ 10 subsequent meetings.

Lille did manage to hold PSG to a 1-1 draw at home last season. With the hosts arriving after a 2-0 success at Angers and PSG determined to claim their first league win, the fixture offers an appealing contest between two teams with significant attacking potential.
