Brentford close in on El Hadji Malick Diouf after reaching agreement with West Ham

Brentford are close to completing a priority summer signing after agreeing a deal with West Ham for Senegal left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have reached an agreement for the 21-year-old, with the transfer expected to be worth €40m (£34.5m), plus a possible €6m (£5.2m) in performance-related bonuses.

The move is not yet formally complete, but Diouf is expected to leave West Ham for Brentford unless there is a major late change in the negotiations. The final formalities could be concluded in the coming hours.

Brentford had identified the left-back position as an area requiring reinforcement despite making a convincing start to the season. The Bees’ recruitment team ultimately focused on Diouf, who has attracted significant interest after an encouraging first campaign in the Premier League.

Diouf made 32 appearances for West Ham last season and provided five assists. His performances quickly brought him to the attention of several clubs, with Brentford now seemingly set to win the race for his signature.

His departure from West Ham has become increasingly likely because of the club’s changed circumstances. West Ham were relegated to the Championship and will compete in England’s second tier this season, a prospect that does not appeal to Diouf.

The Senegal international is therefore expected to remain in the Premier League by joining Brentford. If the remaining details are resolved swiftly, the transfer would represent one of the Bees’ most significant signings of the summer.
